Job Summary:

The Quality Manager/SFQ Practitioner reports directly to the Executive Vice President of Operations and Supply Chain and manages the overall company food safety and quality systems to ensure compliance with regulatory, product identity (organic, kosher, compostable), product specifications and customer requirements. The Quality Manager & SFQ Practitioner manages training/development, and performance of the Quality Control, Quality Assurance/Document Control as well as training systems for Operations personnel on Food Safety and Quality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manages and oversees the Quality Control and Quality Assurance department
  • Responsible for the management of daily Quality Control Operations, including material and finished product inspection/testing, hold, and disposition activities
  • Manages the company Quality and Food Safety programs to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, food safety, quality, product identity, and customer standards. (SQF, Organic, Kosher, FDA, California Department of Health, Costco, HEB, etc.)
  • Serves as SQF Practitioner and site Preventive Controls Qualified Individual. Represents the site as management representative for all food safety, Kosher and quality inspections/audits
  • Reviews and approves all procedures and forms related to food safety and quality to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards
  • Manages applications and renewals of site food safety and quality certifications and registrations
  • Manages Internal Audit programs, including regular GMP inspections/audits, to verify and validate the Food Safety Pre-requisite programs and compliance with company procedures
  • Maintains a comprehensive understanding of all products manufactured by the company as well as the raw materials, packaging materials, and operations required in the manufacturing process including quality specifications and standards
  • Maintains a comprehensive understanding of our operating systems and controls and knows how to access all information
  • Formulates and maintains quality objectives in cooperation with Operations and other managers/supervisors to maximize food safety, product quality, and minimize costs
  • Manages the design, implementation, and execution of Quality and Food Safety training programs
  • Acts as recall coordinator. Participates in mock recalls
  • Oversees the corrective and preventive action (CAPA) program
  • Uses Statistical Process Control to analyze quality data for continuous improvement activities
  • Provides Quality metrics for Quality/Food Safety and Operations Management Review
  • Oversees investigations and responses to customer inquiries and complaints
  • Manages Quality Control special projects testing, competitive analysis, production trial support, product development support
  • Responsible for managing the utilization of Quality Documentation and Data Management Systems for document and material change approval workflows, quality records, training records, task management
  • Responsible for administration of Aptean system check sheet creation and revision
  • Responsible for the management and success of the Quality Control and Quality Assurance Team. Develop yearly SMART goals to measure and track quarterly and yearly
  • Coaches Quality Team to become technical resources for facilitating issue resolution on the production floor
  • Develops technicians and leads in auditing of production team members performing quality processes
  • In the Quality Manager’s absence, the following employee will fulfill the responsibilities:  QC and QA Supervisors

Follow all company procedures and policies, especially with respect to Safety, Food Safety, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

Education and Experience

  • Completion of Certified Training: HACCP, SQF Practitioner, Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI)
  • Familiar with food labeling requirements: State, Federal, International, Organic, Compostable, Kosher
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Food Science
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Quality System and Food Safety Management and supervising employees

  • Professional Skills (typing, systems, applications, etc.)
  • Excellent Computer Skills: Working knowledge of MS Office Applications, use of iPads, managing information in databases and web portals
  • Good communication and presentation skills
  • Good investigating, analyzing, problem-solving skills, mathematical – experience with statistical methods and root cause analysis tools
  • Good writing and reporting skills
  • Organization and project management skills

Salary: $130,000 - $150,000 annually
